London Broncos Academy put up a strong fight against St Helens, played at the 18,000-seater Totally Wicked Stadium.

The Broncos made an excellent start to their latest Super League U19s friendly and were 16-6 ahead during the first half. St Helens restored parity before entering half-time in front by two points.

A further 36 points were registered by the Merseyside club in the second half with Broncos Academy losing 54-16. Youngsters Dan Cannon and Dan Hoyes made their debuts as seven U17s players featured in Broncos Academy’s squad for the away trip.

Broncos Scholarship U17s dug deep against Castleford Tigers with the game 0-0 after 22 minutes at Richmond Athletic Association. Castleford’s superior experience showed in the second half of the game, though, with the visitors winning 6-54.

Rob Powell, Head of Youth at London Broncos, said both fixtures provided the club’s young players with valuable experience as their Rugby League careers develop.

He said: “It was a very competitive first half at St Helens and the boys should be very proud of their efforts. To see two more of our U17s players make their Academy debuts was very pleasing also. Both Dans have worked hard to get to where they are and deserved the call-up.

“Scholarship worked extremely hard too, we feel the score line doesn’t truly reflect the game. For many players, the weekend was their first experience of Rugby League at this level because of the cancellation of the 2020 season.

“It was a good experience for the young lads and one they will improve from for sure.”

The Broncos’ Academy and Scholarship teams have a busy week to look forward to. Both teams are in action at Richmond Athletic Association on Sunday afternoon.

The Academy host Warrington at 12pm before Broncos Scholarship play Leeds Rhinos at 2pm. Importantly, spectators and parents will be able to watch both youth fixtures in line with the Government’s easing of COVID-19 restrictions.

Following Sunday’s game, Broncos Scholarship will travel north on Wednesday, June 2, to play Leeds Rhinos. Kick-off is at 6.30pm.
