Former Newcastle youngster Dan Coates has been added to Jermaine Coleman’s London Broncos squad for 2022 on a 2 year deal, fighting off competition from other Championship and League 1 Clubs for the players signature.

Coates spent 2021 playing in League one for Coventry and the North East born player amassed an impressive 147 points during last season, breaking the Club record, which caught they eye of Coleman and prompted him to move for the young half back.

The potential of Coates led to interest from several Clubs and it is this potential that Jermaine Coleman hopes to nurture in the next two seasons at the Broncos.

He told us “Dan has had a fantastic season with Coventry. He had a prolific points scoring season this year and is deadly with his goal kicking.”

“He’s a young half with bags of potential and can grow with the team. It will be a big challenge for him this year but one I know he is desperate to take on and one I know he can handle.”

Talking to Broncos Media Coates explained some of the reasons why he turned down several other offers to come to London and link up with the Club.

Coates said “Jermaine contacted me and what he had to say really impressed me. He told me he expects me to be around the team most weeks if I play to potential and I am excited about what he is doing with the team at the Broncos.”

“Also for a player of my age living in London is an amazing life experience and I did not want to turn that opportunity down.”

Moving to a Championship Club from League One can be difficult for even experienced players but Coates sees the move as a chance to further his career and is not phased by the step up.

“For me I see it as just another step on the ladder and I am confident I can make that progression over the next two seasons.”

Dan has recently graduated from a degree in Sports Management and is looking for coaching or sports business related opportunities in London to compliment his Rugby career, but the focus is very much on playing.

He added “I always give my all for the team but I feel I’ve also got a good Rugby League brain for a young player and I like to lead teams around the pitch as well as I can.”
