Half Back Oli Leyland has given the Broncos a boost ahead of 2022 by signing a 2 year contract with the Club following his breakthrough season in 2021.

The popular player, a graduate of the Clubs Academy system, had no hesitation in signing the deal offered to him and told Broncos Media that playing for new Head Coach Jermaine Coleman was a big factor for him deciding to stay.

Leyland said “There will be lot’s of new faces this year and it is important to get back to high standards quickly. I worked with Jermaine before at the Skolars and I like the way he coaches.”

“He gives players a lot of freedom which is great for me and I am excited to work with him a lot more. He was a half back so I hope he can really develop me as a player knowing the position I play so well.”

Leyland saw his dream of First Team Rugby come true in 2021 when he made his Professional debut alongisde his long time Academy partner Rian Horsman, and for Oli the coming season is an important one if he is to continue his development.

He said “Making my debut was great and that was topped when I scored my first ever try in front of my parents but I have to keep improving and aim higher. My targets are to be in that side every week and to be the bright spark around the pitch we need to change and win games.”

As a student, doing a degree in History, Oli has welcomed the opportunity to play part-time and finish his studies with more time on his hands. Once completed he hopes the degree will lead him into a new role as a teacher.

“I hope to start my teacher training soon and somewhere down the line become a History teacher. It is great for me now as I will have that additional time I need to learn by training in the evening. It has given me some variety in my life.”

Oli also had a message for supporters ahead of the 2022 season, a year in which the Club will make it’s move to Plough Lane.

He told us “I really hope the fans get behind us next year. Many of them are so loyal and we are going to need them there in numbers to give us the backing we need on the field to win games. We are all in this together and the players appreciate their support.”

For new Head Coach Jermaine Coleman the signing of Oli was an important one and left him pleased to get the young player secured for next season and beyond.

He told us “Oli has that X-Factor about his game, he possesses the attribuite that every team fears, genuine pace and unbelievable acceleration.”

“He has a fantastic attitude and a great desire for this team and Club to be successful. I’m looking forward to working with him this year and having a role in his development.”
