London Broncos Ladies extended their unbeaten Betfred Women’s Super League South run to three matches on Sunday after beating Bristol-based Golden Ferns 24-54.
The 30-point triumph stretched Colin Baker’s squad’s lead at the top of the table to four points following three rounds of fixtures, although Cardiff Demons and Bedford Tigers have two games in hand.
Ladies’ latest tie started in positive fashion as Courtney Treco, Iona McCusker, Emily Hughes and Kay Selby all crossed the whitewash in the opening half to establish a 4-22 lead by half-time.
Selby registered a second try after the break while Faye Hamp and Jess Ingram also chipped in with a try of their own. But it was Hughes who stole the show by touching down three times in the second half to record four individual tries on the day.
The Broncos’ 10 tries combined with Treco’s accurate kicking confirmed the 24-54 score line, and coach Colin Baker could not be more pleased with his side’s preparation and execution.
He said: “Golden Ferns put some good points on the board in their first game against Bedford, so we travelled knowing we’d have to be sharp defensively.
“From kick-off, the team applied themselves exceptionally well to the challenge and we were pleased with the early lead we had established. I think we all expected a reaction from Golden Ferns, and they really tested our defensive resolve in the second half.
“Everyone contributed to the final score, but Emily (Hughes) excelled in the second half and couldn’t put a foot wrong. We’re really pleased with the individual and team performances and enter the summer break in good shape.”
Broncos Ladies have a four-week fixture gap before resuming their Betfred Women’s Super League South campaign on Sunday, July 3, away to Bedford Tigers Women.
The Tigers have played one fixture so far this season and triumphed 64-18 over Golden Ferns. For further information about London Broncos Ladies, or if you’re interested in joining a training session, email Head Coach Colin Baker via [email protected].
