A spectacular Rugby League double-header will take place in Wimbledon this month, with London Broncos Ladies playing at the new Cherry Red Records Stadium for the first time.
In celebration of a historic summer for women’s sport, Broncos Ladies will host Bedford Tigers on Sunday, August 14, in their Betfred Women’s Super League South play-off semi-final at the 9,215 capacity all-seater venue.
The match will take place after Mike Eccles’ in-form first-team host Workington Town in the Betfred Championship, and club officials are forecasting a positive turnout for both games.
Gates will open on the day at 1pm with the men’s match kicking off at 3pm before Ladies take centre stage at 5.30pm.
Jason Loubser, London Broncos CEO, said women’s Rugby League has gone from strength-to-strength in the south-east since Broncos Ladies was launched in 2021. He hopes the club’s Wimbledon appearance can inspire a new generation of female players.
“Our stadium partnership with AFC Wimbledon has the potential to elevate the Broncos badge and our sport in London to a whole new level,” said Jason. “Broncos Ladies are a significant part of our operation and it’s our ambition to connect as many young girls and women as possible to sports participation.
“Broncos Ladies experienced a breakthrough first season by reaching the play-offs and providing a pathway for several squad members to represent their country in international friendlies and major tournaments.
“Colin Baker (Head Coach) has done a fantastic job developing the team and their success on the pitch deserves our support, which is why we’re pleased to host their upcoming semi-final at Wimbledon.
“I would encourage all fans to join us in extending the nation’s celebration of women’s sport by attending the first women’s Rugby League fixture at Plough Lane.”
Broncos Ladies ended their regular season campaign in spectacular fashion at the weekend against Cardiff Demons to pinch the division’s top spot.
Jess Ingram crossed the whitewash in the closing seconds to confirm an 18-20 win over the previously unbeaten Welsh side.
“They never gave up,” said Broncos Ladies Head Coach Colin Baker. “The entire squad’s attitude all season has been extraordinary and there’s a real excitement in the camp ahead of our play-off semi-final.
“It’s a great boost to the team to be able to play at a venue like the Cherry Red Records Stadium. The extraordinary success of the England football team at Wembley in the European Championship final underlines the power of women’s sport right now.
“It would be great to confirm our spot in the final by beating Bedford but attracting more female players to our club and making Rugby League – and sport generally – open and inclusive to everyone is just as important.”
