Back in Super League with a bang

London Broncos returned to the BetFred Super League with a very large bang on Sunday 3rd February.

Seen as the perennial underdogs the Broncos ripped up the script, as they did last season, to record a win in week one of the season over a very good Wakefield Trinity side, at Trailfinders, by 42 points to 24.

The home crowd would have been forgiven in thinking it wasn’t to be in the first 10 minutes as Wakefield came out of the traps at pace and scored twice through Kopczak and Hampshire respectively. Danny Brough converted both and the Broncos faced an uphill task.

Then on 19 minutes the Broncos hit back with their first Super League try in five years as Matty Fleming touched down and Jordan Abdull converted to make it 6 – 12.

Wakefield however kept on going and within two minutes extended the lead to 6 – 18 as Miller went over and Brough again converted.

With 24 minutes gone the Broncos sparked into life and when the halftime hooter sounded tries from Rhys Williams, Kieran Dixon, Eddie Battye and Matty Fozard had turned the game on its head and saw the home side lead 26 – 18 with Abdull missing two conversions and Dixon converting two.

The teams came back out and it started very much as the first half had started with London defending well and keeping the visitors out until the 54th minute when Wood went over for the try and Brough again converted.

The Broncos pushed on undeterred and on 58 minutes Rhys Williams was again over for the try and as Dixon missed the conversion the difference was one converted try.

From there the Broncos again took control as Eddie Battye scored a second try and straight after Danny Brough received a Yellow card for dissent , Elliot Kear finished off a great attacking move from the home side.

As the hooter sounded London Broncos had run out comfortable winners against a very strong established Super League side in Wakefield Trinity and end the weekend third in the BetFred Super League table!

The Broncos now move onto two consecutive away games at Salford Red Devils and then Hull Kingston Rovers hoping to build on a fantastic start to 2019.
