A tough day at Trailfinders for the Broncos as the visitors, Toulouse, ran in six tries to round off a 20 point victory and condemn the Broncos to their first defeat of the season.
The Broncos started well enough with Captain Jay Pitts opening the scoring. Although Jarrod Sammut missed the conversion in rainy conditions, the London side were looking good with some solid early completions.
Then Toulouse struck with tries from Maurel and Curran in quick succession. Broncos got back into the game with centre Ben Hellewell driving over, cutting the French team’s lead to just 2 points.
But the match was put out of reach by three quick tries from Marguerite, Ader and Marion. With Kheirallah not missing a kick all day, the Broncos struggled to keep up with their French opponents.
Just before half time Hepi added to the home side’s misery, making it 30-10.
In true Broncos spirit, the boys came out fighting second half, forcing a mistake from a clever kick-off from Sammut.
Capitalising on the error, Api Pewhairangi went over the whitewash to give the home side a glimpse of a comeback.
Alas it was not to be as the Toulouse defence tightened, becoming impenetrable, despite some powerful runs from Man of the Match Mark Ioane.
Kheirallah added a try to his impressive goal kicking card and frustration got the better of Matt Fleming who was yellow carded – making it hard for 12 man Broncos to make any kind of breakthrough,
Broncos rallied in the final quarter with some smart offloads and line breaks from Alex Walker but it was not to be with the final score standing at 36-16 to the visitors.
Our next fixture is Easter Monday away at Leigh where the boys hope to bounce back.
