Broncos U19’s break their duck

The London Broncos U19 side recorded their first win of the season thanks to a dominant performance against Newcastle Thunder that included a hat-trick from Kai Pearce-Paul.

It seemed to be another difficult start for the visitors when Thunder crossed with their first turn with the ball after Todd Wilkinson benefited from a favourable deflection, but the Broncos were never behind for long.

The right-side caused the Thunder difficulty throughout, and Pearce-Paul opened the Broncos account after running onto a perfect flat pass at pace and eased through the defence. From there the lead kept changing hands, with Will Budd going over to level the scores at 10-10 and Pearce-Paul again putting the Broncos into the lead.

Hodson also went over for the Broncos in the first half, and he could have put the game beyond doubt in the first half when he was presented with a 2-on-1, but the visitors couldn’t quite pull it off. Instead, the Thunder managed to get in on the hooter to keep the game in the balance at 22-22 at the break.

The game continued to swing backwards-and-forwards in the early stages of the second half, with Jonah Varela’s try soon cancelled out by Anthony Dyne, but soon the Broncos began to pull away.

In the final half-hour, the Broncos continued to press and enjoyed long periods with the ball, l and always looked in the ascendency despite a spell in the sin bin for Rob Oakley.

Chris Ball then powered over, before Pearce-Paul and Hodson furthered their tallies, while a strong performance from the boot from Oliver Leyland saw him convert seven from nine attempts, and put the game well beyond the home side.

The visitors may think the game was there for the taking much earlier on, but their second-half performance will be considered a marker as they try to build upon their first win of the season.

The U19s next play against Castleford Tigers at Ealing Trailfinders on 27th April
