London Broncos ventured up a snowy M1 on Sunday 21st of January to face League 1 Doncaster RLFC in their first pre-season friendly of 2018.
Danny Ward named a large squad fore the trip giving some of the talented Academy youngster’s a taste of the action while keeping the bulk of the squad the same as the one that will face this season’s campaign.
Doncaster kicked off in the sleet and the game was underway.
Both teams clearly felt the arctic conditions with handling errors & numerous knocks ons going back and forth between them until the 21st minute when Doncaster Number 14 Connor Scott went over in the corner for the opening try. Jack Miller converted and the hosts were ahead six points to nil. The scrappiness continued until Head Coach Danny Ward brought on Sadiq Adebiyi who followed a strong carry by bulldozing his way over for the first Broncos score of 2018.
Having spent a large part of last season on loan at Oldham, Adebiyi had a point to prove and did so on 25 minutes. Jarrod Sammut converted and we were back level with 12 minutes until the break.
Doncaster RLFC however had other ideas and in the 38th minute winger Sam Doherty slid over the line to give the home side a 10-6 lead at the break.
Ward rang the changes at the start of the second half with Will Lovell, Jacob Ogden, Daniel Harrison and Gideon Boafa all coming on and within two minutes Will Lovell stepped up and dived over for his first try on his return to the team. Sammut converted and the visitors lead for the first time by 10 points to 12.
Five minutes later the diminutive Sammut danced his way through to the goal line to extend the London lead and once he had converted London moved further ahead by 10 points to 18.
Play, again, went through a scrappy period due to the conditions but on 64 minutes Mark Ioane dived over after a barging run to extend the gap to 12 and put London 10 points to 22 in front. The debutants in Meadows, Butler and Joel all held their own showing the strength in depth coming through London’s academy system.
Doncaster centre Liam Welham pulled a try back on 76 minutes but it turned out to be no more than a consolation as London went on to record the win 16 – 22 in their first run out of the season.
London next face Hull KR in another pre-season friendly on Friday 26th January at 7.30pm.
