London Broncos Rugby League loose forward Matt Garside is set to play against his mates this weekend as the Broncos face Sheffield Eagles on Sunday.
The game will be played at Doncaster’s Keepmoat stadium, the temporary home of Sheffield Eagles in 2015, and Garside hopes to come out on top against the friends he regularly keeps in touch with and sees wheneven he returns north.
“I’m excited to play against the lads I got close to for two seasons,” said Garside. “I get a bit of stick from a few of the boys who are at work during the daytime when I’m training. My mate Eddie Battye (Sheffield Eagles prop) drives a truck during the daytime and when I’ve got my feet up at 5:30pm he’s ready to go training. He tries to give me some stick but hopefully on Sunday I’ll have the last laugh.”
The move to London has coincided with a switch to loose forward for Garside, who had been used to the centre position at Sheffield where he played for the previous two seasons.
“Last season and the two season’s before that I was playing on the edges so it’s a lot different playing in the middle, it’s tougher on the lungs and legs but I’m enjoying it.
“I’m definitely pleased to be starting games, that was the aim at the start of pre-season to rip in and try and get a starting spot. I didn’t think it would happen so quickly and I was happy to try and work my way in but now I’ve got to take the opportunities where I can.
“We’ve trained well this week, the first 20 minutes of last week’s game was picture perfect for us, the second we defended too much, made too many tackles and didn’t have the ball for long enough. We’ve looked to train well this week and step it up at the weekend against Sheffield.”
