Junior Rugby League thrives in the Capital

The London Rugby League Foundation again proved on Saturday 22 July that Junior League is thriving here in the capital.

Teams from all over London and the South East converged on Trailfinders Sports Club for their end of season Grand Finals day, with children as young as seven years old taking part.

From Richmond to Brentwood, Brixton to Hemel Hempstead, the children, with parents in tow, flocked to what turned out to be a festival of rugby league in the heart of West Ealing.

The Primary Festival got us underway, the under 7s and under 9s playing a round robin format, while the under 11s were playing their games on the main stadium pitch.

Richmond Titans, Brentwood Eels, Brixton Bulls, Surrey Sharks, Eastern Rhinos, London Skolars and Elmbridge Eagles all played their hearts out, and showed a commitment to the game that Broncos Head Coach, Andrew Henderson, would have been proud of.

At this age, fair play awards are handed out in each age group and London Broncos player, Junior Roqica, gave the kids a day to remember when he handed over the silverware.

Then it was onto the afternoon’s events, which saw the under 13, under 14 and under 16 grand finals taking place on the main pitch, with, for the boys taking part, their season on the line.

First up, came the under 13 final between Hemel Stags and St Albans Centurions, and after a tight game, Hemel Stags walked away with the title.

The under 13 final was a great display of the junior game considering the torrential downpour which greeted them, but it was the under 14 final which stole the show – an amazing win for Elmbridge Eagles over Brentwood Eels by a solitary point, winning 17 -16.

The under 16 final always promised to be a fiery affair as Invicta Panthers had beaten their opponents, Bromley Bengals, earlier in the season 42 -18. Bromley had won the return league fixture, making the final the decider in the three game series.

The game could not have been much closer – Bromley finally took the match by 22-20, and the title of Under 16 Grand Final winners.

Carl Horsman, London Rugby League Chairman, said: “Both the Primary Festival and the Grand Finals were a huge success, and really showed London Rugby League in a positive light. A big thanks must go to Trailfinders Sports Club and London Broncos for all their assistance throughout the day.”
