Leatherbarrow: Batley have had an incredible season

The Broncos face Batley Bulldogs this Sunday in the side’s first home tie in the Middle 8s, and former Bulldog, Scott Leatherbarrow, is confident of a tough encounter.

The sides have previously met twice in 2016, and both times the respective home team emerged victorious. London defeated Batley 32-8 at Trailfinders in April, and Batley downed London 31-20 at Fox’s Biscuits in July.

Leatherbarrow is looking forward to seeing old teammates, and a big game for both sides.

“I’m looking forward to seeing them, and I’m sure they’re buzzing to come down here and hoping to get a result.

“We can expect a big set of forwards ready to take it to us for 80 minutes. They are possibly seen as the underdogs for the Middle 8s – being one of just two part time teams in the comp – so they are coming here with nothing to lose and everything to gain. We need to be 100% focused on doing a job.

“It’s been an incredible season for Batley, and fair play to the team and club for their achievements this season, truly deserved.

“They will be very tough to beat and we know if we aren’t at our best then we will get beaten. They are a team who complete high and defend tough so any mistakes by us and they will pounce, so we need to be on our game.

“I’m looking forward to getting a job done first of all and getting the two points, but then to have a catch up with some friends and enjoy the experience.”

2016 has been nothing short of an incredible season for the Bulldogs, the part time side defeated Swinton 62-24 in the final round of the Kingstone Press Championship to secure a top four spot, and subsequent place in the Qualifiers.

“Their season has been an unbelievable one this year. To make the Middle 8s, especially beating full time teams such as Bradford and Sheffield to the top four, is a great achievement,” said Leatherbarrow.

“They’re playing with confidence every game, and playing under a fantastic coach who has been in these positions before. I know what John will be like during training all week and also with his team talks pre-game – he will have them fired up for the Middle 8s giving them the confidence and belief that they can beat anybody in the Qualifiers.
