London Academy produces again

London Broncos are delighted to announce that 19 year old Gideon Boafo has put pen to paper on his first full time professional contract with club.

Boafo, who has been with the club since the age of 15, started in the player development centre before progressing to the London Scholarship programme until he was 16. At 16 he was taken into the Academy system where he has continued to progress under the guidance of Rob Powell, Head of Youth Development, Jamie Langley and most recently Huw Goodwin.

Gideon told us, ” I am absolutely delighted to be able to sign for the first team for 2019. Its the dream of every player coming through the system to make it to the highest level and pull on the shirt especially now the club are back in Super League.”

Boafo also said, ” I would not have been able to do this without the fantastic coaching I have had through the years and want to take the opportunity to say thank you to Danny Ward for having belief in me, Jamie, Huw and Rob for making me the player that I am now. I know I still have a lot to learn but am excited to be a part of the 2019 Broncos side.”

Having worked with Gideon for a number of years Rob Powell said, “‘I am really pleased for Gideon. He has played rugby league for a long time having come through Croydon hurricanes and then spent 5 years on our programme. He should be commended for the fact he has lived on the other side of London and always found a way to get to training. Gideon has had set backs along the way and he is a great example of what can be achieved if you continue to work hard towards your goal.”

Head Coach Danny Ward said, “Gideon has been rewarded for consistently performing over the last few years for our under 19’s team. He is an exciting player, equally at home on the wing or at full back and his performances saw him awarded as the player of the year this season. We have shown that the pathway is there for our juniors to develop and we can’t wait to see Gideon continue to grow in our full time environment.”

Broncos Chairman, David Hughes told us, ” We have been impressed with Gideon at the Academy level and we can promote yet another of our home grown products. The success last season of players like Meadows, Butler, Hindmarsh, Davis and Davies clearly shows the development at the club and I am sure that Gideon will be another success story.”
