Centre Wes Naiqama says he’s proud to captain the London Broncos in the absence of Richie Mathers (ankle) and Nick Slyney (shoulder) and he’s glad to be part of the history of the club.
“Obviously it’s unfortunate that we’ve lost both of our senior boys in Richie and Nick,” said Naiqama on the eve of the Broncos game against Whitehaven.
“I got told the other day that I’d be leading the side out this week and it’s something I don’t take lightly. I’m very proud as there’s a proud history at the club, plenty of guys that have led the club before me so there’s a big job for me to lead the boys out this weekend.”
Naiqama says the on field captaincy isn’t something he thought he’d be offered this season but will lead with his actions on the field:
“I was already part of the leadership group and we already had three captains and I just do my thing of helping out the boys at training and helping out the coaches. I’m not much of a talker myself, that’s where we’ll miss Richie, I try and lead with my actions out there. I’m one of the older heads and I just need to be sure the boys keep composed and we stick to our game plan and put in place what we’ve been practising all week.
“Hendo (Interim head coach Andrew Henderson) made a good point that we’ve not put a complete 80 minute game together. We’ve seen patches of it in the first round against Doncaster and patches again last week, but yes we’ve definitely not put an 80 minute performance together and that will be a goal of ours. We’ve got goals in place where if we do achieve those goals we will get that result and a complete performance for the team.”
