London Broncos Rugby League can today confirm that PNG international captain Israel Eliab has signed a one year contract subject to visa clearance. Sources down under leaked the news earlier this week as we were awaiting final paperwork and confirmation.
Eliab 24, who plays primarily at stand-off but can also play centre, burst onto the scene in the 2013 World cup for PNG. He has spent the last 2 seasons with Intrust Super Cup (Queensland cup) side the PNG Hunters in which he was also captain.
Head coach Andrew Henderson was ecstatic to get his man. ‘Izzy is an exciting talent who I believe will compliment our backs division and excite the fans. I’m very much looking forward to working with him. He is a decent size, quick, strong and skilful. He will certainly bring some PNG flair and leadership quality to the team.’
The PNG star who had attracted interest from the NRL after being named in the top 10 players in the Intrust Super Cup competition and making the Team of the Year is excited about the move.
‘I’m very much looking forward to joining the Broncos for 2016. It will be a whole new experience for my partner and I but one we are both excited about. The opportunity to be a full time rugby league player which will help me develop further also attracted me. I look forward to arriving in London and meeting my new team-mates. Hopefully as a team we will work hard and get back to the SuperLeague.’ said Eliab.
Henderson further added, ‘We would like to commend the PNG Hunters staff and management for the great work they are doing for Rugby League in PNG and producing the quality players like Israel that we see in professional competitions across the world. As a club we would like to officially welcome Israel and his partner Mariah to the club and hope they enjoy their time as part of the Broncos family.’
This signing completes Andrew Henderson’s squad for 2016. Prop forward Mark Ioane is expected to land sometime next week to join up with his new team mates.
