This Sunday saw the London Broncos hold a successful trial for the club’s Scholarship programme – over 40 players attended, hoping for their chance to join London’s under 16s in 2017.
The Scholarship forms part of the wider Academy, and is the first rung on the ladder in becoming a professional rugby league player. Those selected will join an already strong squad of 44 – 14 of whom have returned as senior scholarship players (having been under 15s last season), as well as an additional 30 players already on trial with the squad.
Under 16s head coach, Huw Goodwin, was pleased with the trial’s outcome: “The trial was successful. There were over 40 players present, and the standard was very high.
“It was good to both see players who are known to us, and some we have not seen before.
“We need to make sure the process for Scholarship recruitment is as thorough as possible, and provide players from throughout our region as many chances as possible to show what they can do.
“Players from the trial will be getting the opportunity to spend more time on the scholarship programme as a result of their performance on Sunday.”
The Scholarship play 10 games against Super League opposition between February and August, and London’s overall programme received a rating of GOOD by the RFL external auditors in 2016.
