Thackray: Top four can still be achieved

After a two-try man of the match performance Jamie Thackray says the top four can still be achieved by the Broncos as they look towards Leigh Centurions next Sunday.

The Broncos faced second placed Bradford Bulls and went down 36-18 after a blistering start by the London side saw them go two tries up in the opening ten minutes.

“We’re not going to be too down on the result, we’ll work hard again in training this week and if we can compete next week we can shock Leigh,” said Thackray. “We’re not far off as people can see, five or six weeks ago we might have crumbled but we stuck on there until the end.”

Thackray says competition for places is spurring on the players in training.

“We’re playing the Champions next week and I’m sure training will be 100 miles-per-hour this week, everyone is fighting for places. Hendo (Andrew Henderson) has brought in more players and everyone knows if you don’t perform you won’t get in the team. We’ll go into the game with confidence; every team we’ve play lately we’ve started well and we’ve gone a couple of tries up but we’ve let let teams back in with mistakes and penalties, if we can knock that on the head who knows what can happen.

“We’ve had Matt Davis come in recently and Jonny Walker came into the side against Bradford and showed what he can do, I thought he carried really well today. There’s pressure to get in the team now so there’s no use moping about and sulking you’ve just go to go out on the field and take it.”

Thackray knows the side aren’t too far off the pace of the Kingstone Press Championship and the top four is still there for the taking.

“Everyone is having a dig now and team spirit is good, even today we got beaten but there’s bits to work on and we know we’re not far off. We can beat any team when we play at our potential, last week against Sheffield we got a complete performance so what we have to do now is keep working and each week get better. The top four is still not out of the question.”
