U19s lose out by three tries to an unbeaten St Helens

As the match got underway, Saints gifted London field position by dropping the kick off, however an error from London let them off the hook.

St Helens were first on the score sheet through Kevin Brown who went in out wide, and Ben Morris shortly followed as he crashed over to make it 0-10.

The Broncos were trying their best to close the gap, but Saints went over again – this time it was Lewis Purlong who squeezed in out wide.

London hit back straight away, when captain, Sadiq Adebiyi, crossed for his first of the match. Both sides were now going set for set but some sloppy defence from London let Saints in twice; through Elliot Jenkins, and Kevin Brown for his brace, further widening the score to 24-6.

Easing the pressure, London’s big second rower, Rob Butler, crossed just before the half time whistle to send the boys in at 12-24.

The game was not out of sight for London and they knew that they needed to come out fighting to gain the lead, but Saints proved too – Josh Eaves went over the whitewash, only to be Matty Costello just moments later.

The Broncos weren’t going to go down without a fight – completing sets and giving all they had resulted in the Saints’ second rower being sent to the bin, and London scored two tries in quick succession. Adebiyi went over for his brace, and Callum Bustin was across not long after.

With London rolling Saints and the scores only at 24-36 the game was well in contention of winning for the Broncos, however a slight slip up in defence against a very strong and unbeaten side is always going to be costly, which it was. Saints’ Aaron Smith crossed for the final try of the match and wrapped the game up.

With the final score 24-42 Broncos were left disappointed but very proud of their efforts against an unbeaten side.

The U19s next game is away to Bradford Bulls on Thursday 1st August.
