London Broncos Rugby League is pleased to announce that Welsh International winger, Rhys Williams, has signed an additional two year contract, keeping him at the club until at least 2019.
Williams, 27, joined the Broncos for the 2015 season and has been ever present in the Broncos shirt while not missing a game for the club. He scored 31 tries in 2016 alone, ending the year as the Championship’s top try scorer.
With 24 international caps and 18 tries to his name, he is also a likely contender to join the Welsh squad in the 2017 Rugby League World Cup later this year.
At the end of this new contract, Williams will have been with the club for five years, something which head coach, Andrew Henderson, says is a big achievement for the London Broncos.
“I think the great thing for us now, is that we’re getting players who want to play for London, commit to London and see their futures in London . This is Rhys’ third year, and with another two that will mean he’ll have been here for five in total.
“Rhys has been exceptional since he joined the club – he’s had two really strong years, and he’s obviously playing really well again this season and I don’t see that changing.
“I know what he’s capable of, and I still think he’s got a lot of years ahead of him. He’s starting to develop now as a senior player within the team.
“Rhys has been phenomenal since he’s been at the club – his try scoring record proves that. He’s been fantastic for us on the field, his work rate and the tries that he scores. He’s a true competitor with a will to win
When asked about the decision to spend five years with the club, Williams put it down to happiness, and enjoying plying his trade with the Broncos.
“I’m happy down here, more than anything. As long as I’m happy where I am and I’m playing consistently, then I’m more than happy to sign.
“London is a great city, and not many people get to say they’ve lived here, so to say I’ll have been here for such a long period is incredible.
“I’m delighted to have re-signed. My first year was touch and go, but last year went perfectly. We’ve started a bit scratchy this season, but we’re getting onto some form now.
“To the fans, I just want to say, just keep supporting us. It’s been a hard start, but we’re playing well now and starting to come back to where we were last year. Please get behind us for the back end of the campaign – the top of the table is so tight that it’s going to be exciting to watch. Hopefully we can kick on and start to break away into the top two.
“I’m very excited to say I’ve signed again, and I’m looking forward to the next two years.”
