Langley Park School from Beckenham struck a blow for London Rugby league as they battled through to the Quarter Finals of the Year 7 National Champion Schools Cup, with a hard fought win against Ryburn Valley School from Halifax.
Langley Park got off to a difficult start, spilling the ball then conceding a try on their first defensive set and looked set for a long afternoon. However, they rallied strongly with 3 tries from centre Max Mostafa-O'Hanlon, and a goal from half-back Jack Kemp-Jones giving them a 16-4 half time lead.
The second half saw some great defence, but with the wind behind them Ryburn stepped up a level and closed the gap with less than 10 minutes on the clock, although with the conversion hitting the post, Langley still had a two-score lead. After some great goal line defence and hard running from second row George Mustafa and second row, and Player of the Match, Fraser Exton, O'Hanlon was able to power over from long-range to leave Langley 20-8 in the lead with only 4 minutes to go.
Ryburn weren't done yet though, and reduced the arrears to only 6 points with a minute to go to leave time for a nervy final act. But Langley dug deep, with a great cover tackle from Mustafa, and hung on for a great victory. Langley are now only two wins away from a place at Wembley before the Challenge Cup Final.
