CORNWALL RLFC 32 NEWCASTLE THUNDER 22 By GARETH DAVIES, Memorial Ground THE battle of League 1’s most remote outpost clubs went the way of the home side, as they eased aside a Thunder outfit without a win since 2023. Although the final margin of victory was just 10 points, the game was as good as up for Newcastle when Australian centre Kye Jacobsen, making his Cornwall debut, finished with ease 25 minutes from time. However, a combination of Newcastle resilience and Cornwall going away from the basics that had served them so well, led to a late points flurry from the visitors, which included two converted tries in the final eight minutes. Playing down the fabled Memorial Ground slope in the opening 40, Cornwall saw prop forward Matt Ross, playing under dual-registration from London Broncos, held up over the line in their first attacking set. Such was Cornwall’s dominance, every play the ball during the opening six minutes came in the Newcastle half. Twice the home side’s outstanding half back Adam Rusling almost played in winger Henry Symons out wide, but a combination of staunch Thunder defending and a loose final pass saw the deadlock remain unbroken. Very much against the run of play, it was Thunder who capitalised on Cornwall letting a drop out find touch, to score first. A kick in behind was gathered by Charlie Yeomans who successfully touched down, with Alex Donaghy tacking on the extra two. The lead didn’t last long, though, with Rusling creating further opportunities, two of which were taken by rangy winger Symons in the far left corner. The first was a straightforward touchdown after a flowing move, with the second coming from a deft grubber.  Rusling couldn’t convert either of Symons’ efforts, but Cornwall were in charge and bar the final exchanges, they were completely dominant.

MATCH REPORT: Oldham RLFC 50-6 London Broncos The Broncos returned to league action for the first time in a month with a trip to Oldham and were on the end of a heavy defeat. It’s an afternoon which may cost more than just a result as Mike Eccles' threadbare squad endured a number of injuries which could have a knock on effect on the weeks ahead. Connor O’Beirne missed out through injury which allowed an opportunity for academy graduate Jenson Binks to be handed his first-team debut. Despite the difficult circumstances the 20-year-old showed up well with a number of impressive contributions. Broncos started the game in the worst possible fashion and conceded two tries within the first ten minutes. A combination of a slow start from the visitors but Oldham showing an impressive response to a couple of poor results in recent weeks. The start was compounded when Lewis Bienek had to come off for a HIA. An assessment he would fail and the Broncos were without a key man for the rest of the game.

TEAM NEWS: Oldham RLFC vs London Broncos Here is your starting line-up for this afternoon’s Championship clash with Oldham RLFC at Boundary Park. Academy graduate Jenson Binks comes in to make his full debut in the place of Connor O’Beirne. The 20-year-old halfback has been with the club since the age of 15 and impressed last season for the reserves. Wigan loanee Taylor Kerr also comes into the 13 and starts at loose forward with Marcus Stock moving into prop whilst Kian McDermott is named as an interchange. Jensen Monk returns to the matchday squad and Ben Hursey-Hord is named as 18th man as Mike Eccles names 8 London born or academy products in the 18. #WeAreLondon

SQUAD ANNOUNCEMENT: Oldham RLFC vs London Broncos Mike Eccles has named his squad for Sunday’s Championship trip to take on Oldham RLFC at Boundary Park. It is a very similar squad to the one that faced Dewsbury Rams in the 1895 Cup but both Matt Ross and Sam Winney are likely to feature for Cornwall RLFC on their dual registration’s so drop out of the Broncos squad. The new name in the squad is that of 20-year-old halfback Jenson Binks who is named in a first team squad for the first time. Binks has been with the club since the age of 15 and has impressed with both the academy and reserve side last season.
