Preview: 2024 Super League Round 24: London Broncos vs Leeds Rhinos

James Booth • 30 August 2024

The Broncos have their final home game of the 2024 Super League season on Sunday as we face off against Leeds Rhinos for the third time this season. When we faced Leeds earlier in the season at AMT Headingly Stadium (Round 10 & Round 16) the Rhinos won the first game 46-8 and then the second fixture went to Golden Point, where Leeds snatched the win 17-16.

Leeds Rhinos vs London Broncos highlights (Super League Round 16):

The Broncos have faced Leeds Rhinos on 63 occasions in all competitions, scoring 1105 points and conceding 2132 points. Click here to read the full in-depth history of the London Broncos vs Leeds Rhinos fixture!

The Broncos have picked up some form over past few weeks and are now joint bottom with Hull FC after winning three games this season, 2 vs Hull FC & 1 vs Catalans Dragons. Sunday’s fixture could prove an excellent opportunity to use the momentum which the lads have built to push themselves off the bottom spot in the Super League table for the first time this season. This fixture also comes with extra motivation for the Broncos as this is the last game of the 2024 season which is being played at home- will this be enough to push us over the line for our 4th win of the season?

Leeds Rhinos have had a positive season in the Super League and are pushing for a playoff spot, winning 12 games & losing 10. Leeds have won 4 of their last 6 including a huge 18-6 win vs playoff chasing Catalans Dragons last weekend.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s fixture, Broncos Director of Rugby & Performance Mike Eccles says “It’s a sad day that Sunday is the last time that people are going to see this group play together. It is the end of a small era and I think that it is important that we stick together through this. I encourage everybody to get down.

“It has taken us so long to get up to speed but it’s clear that we have picked up some good performances, so it is a shame that we feel like it’s just coming together and just ending at the same time.

“Leeds are flying at the minute. Brad Arthur has come in and done a fantastic job and it just so happens that they are coming here with lots of purpose. They’re fully loaded and have high purpose to get into the playoff places.”

Also speaking to Broncos media is Broncos captain Will Lovell who says “We are preparing really well for games, there is a lot of effort and intensity in how we are playing, there are just a few smart things which are letting us down at the moment like how we are finishing our sets and managing the game.

“I’m really proud of the boys & proud of the way we had a little reboot half way through the year and the boys have shown that in the last 8-10 games.

“We know Leeds are a good side and it’s fantastic to play against them and give it out best but we do owe them one and hopefully this weekend we can stick it on them and get 2 points for the fans.”

The club was in transition at the time, with the Brisbane Broncos directors, who owned the club, signing Australian players to try to win promotion from the Second Division. Tony joined the club from North Sydney. He had played 120 first team games for Norths, including captaining them to the Grand Final in 1991.

GAMEWEEK: Featherstone Rovers vs London Broncos Off the back of another win at The Cherry Red Records on Saturday against Hunslet the Broncos move into cup action this weekend. We turn our attentions to the 1895 Cup and a place in the semi-finals is at stake when we head to Featherstone Rovers to take on Paul Cooke's side. The last time we were in the 1895 Cup we reached the semi-final stages of the competition and will be looking to go at least one step further on this occasion. Broncos have already faced Featherstone once this season and it was Mike Eccles side who took the win in a league game at Wimbledon. The last time Broncos played at Featherstone was in the semi-final of the play-offs in 2023 and it was the Broncos who picked up a shock win to progress to the final and ultimately seal promotion back to Super League. LONDON BRONCOS V HUNSLET (by David Ballheimer) London Broncos (16) 26, Hunslet (0) 6 London Broncos produced one of their most dominant defensive performances in recent memory as they beat Hunslet at the Cherry Red Records Stadium on Saturday night. Such was London’s control of the ruck that the Yorkshiremen had only one attack on the London line, and they turned over the ball-carrier before he could ground the ball. At the other end, Hunslet could not cope with the power and strength of London’s ball-carriers. The Broncos made a great start, scoring on their second possession, courtesy of Marcus Stock, who found a way through three tacklers before stretching over the line and grounding the ball. Most of the credit, however, belonged to Huw Worthington, who charged 35 metres downfield returning a kick. Four minutes later, Stock turned provider, turning in a tackle and sending Luke Polselli over. The half-back was able to run behind the posts to make Chris Hellec’s second conversion even easier than his first.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS: London Broncos 26-6 Hunslet RLFC London Broncos returned to winning ways on Saturday as Mike Eccles side picked up a valuable win over Hunslet at The Cherry Red Records Stadium. The Broncos were forced into making 8 changes from the 18-man squad that lost to Oldham the week before so despite Hunslet's league position, a win was far from a foregone conclusion.
