Preview: 2024 Super League Round 4: London Broncos vs Wigan Warriors

James Booth • 8 March 2024

The London Broncos have their second home Super League game of 2024 this Sunday as they face off against World Champions Wigan Warriors at the Cherry Red Records stadium, Wimbledon. This is the first game that the Broncos have played against Wigan since May 2nd, 2019, at the DW Stadium, where the Warriors walked away 18-8 victors in front of a crowd of 9,907. The Broncos have had a difficult beginning to their 2024 Super League campaign losing their first 3 games to St Helens Saints (40-4, click here to read the full match report), Catalans Dragons (0-34, click here to read the full match report) and Hull FC (28-24, click here to read the full match report).

Wigan Warriors are on the opposite end of the spectrum of results, maintaining a perfect 100%-win record in the Super League so far beating Castleford Tigers 4-32 and Huddersfield Giants 30-16. Wigan’s match vs Leigh Leopards was postponed due to Wigan, being 2023 Super League champions, competing in the World Club Challenge vs the 2023 NRL Champions Penrith Panthers- a match which the Warriors won 16-12 securing their 5th World Club Challenge in their history.

Speaking ahead of our Round 4 clash on Saturday, Wigan Warriors head coach, Matt Peet says “They (London) are a committed group no doubt, they have their challenges but if you watched them on the weekend vs Hull FC they are not throwing in the towel.

“We need to be somewhere close to our best and if we are, we will win the game but if we dip below out standard then it could become tighter than it needs to be- we need to give them the respect which they deserve.”

Also speaking ahead of this weekend’s fixture was former Bronco Abbas Miski who says “It’s very exciting- the first time I came to the UK I played for London for a year. A lot of the boys that I played alongside are still there and they are an eager team to go well.

“They are going to be tough; we are not underestimating them; we know what they are and what they can bring so it’s exciting”.

Ahead of this Saturday’s fixture Broncos assistant coach, Ryan Sheridan, says “The mood within the camp is positive. If you are seeing over the course of the past 3 games there has been plenty of improvement, confidence is growing, and the Hull FC performance was a massive improvement from the previous two weeks.

“We’re going into this game confident, things that we are practising we are seeing coming out in games, so we are really pleased with that.

“We know what to expect with Wigan. We are coming off a tough loss, but we are confident with the things that we are practising and where we are improving so we go into the game confident”.

Also speaking to Broncos media was Marcus Stock, who played 78 minutes for the Broncos last weekend vs Hull FC after Dean Parata’s head injury. Stock says “It’s a massive weekend and this is the best bit about Super League, playing against these huge teams like world champions, former world champions, playing these kinds of teams every week is one of the best things.

“You need to take as many positives as you can, to go toe to toe with Hull FC for that long was as a sign that we can do it, it’s just a shame we couldn’t get it over the line- we’re working hard this week and focusing now upon this weekend”.

“A lot of players in the team, including me, hadn’t played Super League before this year- having played only three games and nearly beating a team is building us psychologically for the majority of the squad”.

It is no secret that this game is going to be one of the most difficult in the Broncos 2024 Super League calendar, as it is for any team in the world. This fixture is an excellent opportunity for the Broncos to go toe to toe with the best team in the world and hopefully, with determination and grit, can elevate the Broncos’ Super League development to the next level ahead of the rest of the season, specifically into next week’s St Patrick’s Day clash vs Warrington Wolves at the Cherry Red Records Stadium (get your tickets to this fixture now by clicking here!)

MIKE ECCLES: “Things will get better this season.” London Broncos Director of Rugby & Performance Mike Eccles has assured fans that better things are on the horizon after a sticky period of form. It has been a tough run of results with three consecutive results but also injuries and unavailability of dual-registration players has meant Mike Eccles has been operating with the bare minimum in terms of players available for selection. The run doesn’t get any easier as this weekend Broncos are on the road again but this time to the league leaders Halifax Panthers on Sunday.

MATCH PREVIEW: Barrow Raiders vs London Broncos London Broncos have their longest away trip on UK soil this week as they make the trip up to Cumbria to take on Barrow Raiders. Broncos have lost their last two games and last three away games so will be looking to bounce back with a win on Good Friday. Mike Eccles’ side were a matter of seconds away from victory against Batley Bulldogs at The Cherry Red Records but suffered heartbreak as Alfie Dean scored in the final play to send the Bulldogs back to West Yorkshire with the points. Barrow have enjoyed a good start to the season and come into this game off the back of a good win at Widnes Vikings with a 37-12 win. It means in the early stages of the season after 6 games the Raiders have won 4 and currently sit in 4th place.
