Preview: 2024 Super League Round 8: London Broncos vs Salford Red Devils

James Booth • 18 April 2024

The London Broncos have their fifth Super League home game of 2024 this Saturday as they face off against Salford Red Devils at the Cherry Red Records Stadium. This is the first game that the Broncos have played against Salford since 4th August 2019, where the Red Devils walked away 28-58 victors in front of a crowd of 1,445 at Trailfinders. Click here to read the full in-depth history of the London Broncos vs Salford Red Devils fixture!

The Broncos have had a difficult beginning to their 2024 Super League campaign, losing their first 7 games to St Helens Saints (40-4, click here to read the full match report), Catalans Dragons (0-34, click here to read the full match report) Hull FC (28-24, click here to read the full match report), Wigan Warriors (22-60, click here to read the full match report), Warrington Wolves (4-58, click here to read the full match report), Huddersfield Giants (6-26, click here to read the full match report) & Hull KR (50-10, click here to read the full match report).

Salford have also played seven games so far this season and are currently sat in 7th place after winning 4 (26-22 vs Castleford, 17-10 vs Hull KR, 20-24 vs Saint Helens & 32-22 vs Leigh Leopards) and losing 3 (22-16 vs Leeds Rhinos, 12-22 vs Wigan Warriors & 36-24 vs Castleford Tigers) games so far this season.

Speaking ahead of our Round 8 clash on Saturday, Salford Red Devils assistant coach Krisnan Inu says "You don't judge any team on their past performances. Anyone can win on the day and they're a good team, good rugby team, and they know how to play with the ball."

Also speaking ahead of Saturday’s fixture is Red Devils’ player Joe Shorrocks, who says “We’ve spoken about it (London) as a team, we’re pretty sure that we won’t let (Round 7 loss) happen again. Hopefully this week we can improve.

“They are obviously desperate for a win like Castleford were. They’re at home and they’ll have some fans behind them. They throw the ball about which is difficult to defend in itself so we have to look out for that especially”.

Ahead of this Saturday’s fixture we caught up with new Bronco’s loan signing Ugo Tison who says “I am happy to be here, I’m happy to be in London. It’s a great opportunity for me to play more games in Super League and I want to play well for London.

“I’m very excited, I hope I play this week!

“I am a simple player, I can play hooker or half. I have a lot of vision and a player who works hard and doesn’t make many mistakes!”

Also talking to Broncos media this week was Sam Davis, who scored the first Super League try of his career in our Round 7 matchup vs Hull KR (watch the video below to see his try)

Davis says “It’s one thing getting here but as a group we want to thrive, we don’t want to be a passenger in this league and that’s what we are going to strive to do.

"We want to win games and we want to compete. We’re building every week and we are getting better and that’s the goal.”

Looking back through history where, out of the 20 games which have been played in London, the Broncos have won 9, Salford have won 10 and there has been one draw, in addition to the Red Devil’s latest Super League loss to Castleford Tigers, there has arguably not been a better opportunity so far at home this season to get points on the league table for the Broncos. The key for London must be to start strongly and put points on the board early. Allowing a Salford team into the game who are looking to get back onto winning ways could be detrimental to our chances of a win.

Another way that the Broncos can push for their first win of the season is through the fans. It is so important that we have a strong turn out and a big atmosphere to give the players the extra 10% when they need it! To get your tickets for Saturday’s game make sure to click here!

LONDON BRONCOS V HUNSLET (by David Ballheimer) London Broncos (16) 26, Hunslet (0) 6 London Broncos produced one of their most dominant defensive performances in recent memory as they beat Hunslet at the Cherry Red Records Stadium on Saturday night. Such was London’s control of the ruck that the Yorkshiremen had only one attack on the London line, and they turned over the ball-carrier before he could ground the ball. At the other end, Hunslet could not cope with the power and strength of London’s ball-carriers. The Broncos made a great start, scoring on their second possession, courtesy of Marcus Stock, who found a way through three tacklers before stretching over the line and grounding the ball. Most of the credit, however, belonged to Huw Worthington, who charged 35 metres downfield returning a kick. Four minutes later, Stock turned provider, turning in a tackle and sending Luke Polselli over. The half-back was able to run behind the posts to make Chris Hellec’s second conversion even easier than his first.

London Broncos announce dual-registration with Warrington Wolves London Broncos are pleased to announce the club has agreed a dual-registration partnership with Super League club Warrington Wolves for the 2025 season. The announcement further strengthens the links between the two clubs with Wolves youngsters Zac Bardsley-Rowe and Jake Thewlis joining on loan deals at the start of the season. We have now moved to make the relationship stronger by moving to a dual-registration agreement. This will allow the opportunity for players at Warrington to gain some valuable game time in the Championship with Mike Eccles side. With Mike as a highly respected coach we thank Warrington for entrusting us with some of their brightest talents. As part of the announcement both Tom Whitehead and Alfie Johnson will join up with the Broncos and both are available for selection for the next game against Hunslet. SQUAD ANNOUNCEMENT: London Broncos vs Hunslet RLFC Mike Eccles has named his squad for this weekend’s Championship action when London Broncos welcome Hunslet to The Cherry Red Records. This week we give a warm welcome to Tom Whitehead and Alfie Johnson who join the squad from Warrington Wolves. Also joining the squad is former Broncos academy centre Ted Davidson. The 22-year-old centre played in the recent Capital Challenge game at the HAC and scored two tries for the London Development team. Ted came through the same system as former team mates Jamie Humphrey’s, Oli Leyland, Ramon Silva and Kai Pearce-Paul. (I can fill in more detail in an interview about him going away etc). Jake Thewlis, Lukas Mason, Kian McDermott and Taylor Kerr return this week to their respective parent clubs. We can also update fans on the fitness of Connor O’Beirne who missed the game with Oldham due to injury. We can confirm that he has sustained a knee injury so is set to be unavailable for selection for the next two months. Finally, Lewis Bienek suffered a head knock in the game at Oldham and failed his HIA so is unavailable for the weekend’s game in line with concussion protocol. #WeAreLondon
