Jarred Bassett: I’m retiring from my short career in professional Rugby League”

London Broncos back Jarred Bassett has today announced that he will be leaving the club at the end of the season to move back home to Australia.

Jarred’s career, whilst short, is one that we hope will inspire many others that it’s never too late to follow your dreams.

Just four years ago Jarred was still playing amateur rugby in the Southern Conference with West Warriors. What followed was a move to London Skolars in League 1, a move to London Broncos then in the Championship before stepping up to Super League in 2024. No player in history has made that career progression in that space of time.

Speaking to London Broncos media, Jarred said;

“For a long time I’ve been thinking about going back to Australia but I guess the only thing keeping me here was footy, my job and my girlfriend but it’s just got to that point where I have been thinking about it all year and I am ready to go home.

“I’ve played since I was 5 years old so I’ve been playing for 27 years and not that I’m injured but now that I am older I have noticed it takes longer to recover and I guess mentally I’m just not sure I’ve got enough to keep on going, even though the body is fine I think mentally I’m ready to move on to other things in my life.”

Talking about his remarkable step up through the leagues, Jarred said he had given up hope of becoming a professional;

“I got here in 2015 just with a backpack and made some mates and started playing some local footy with West Warriors, then had a go at London Skolars and then luckily came to London Broncos and obviously we won the league and I’m here now so it’s definitely been a crazy ride and I’m proud of where I came from to where I am and I will look back on it all very fondly.”

London Broncos announce partnership with ‘Tickets for Good’. London Broncos are delighted to announce a continued partnership with ‘Tickets for Good’ for the 2025 season as we aim to make Rugby League more accessible to communities in the London area. The aim of ‘Ticket for Good’ reads; “We know how important live events are to society and culture, but we also know they can be difficult to attend - every year tickets are getting more expensive and harder to find. We are here to break down that barrier, by giving free and discounted live event tickets to the NHS and charity workers. “To achieve our goal, we have partnered with some of the UK’s best live event companies to source our tickets, helping them develop their audiences and increase their social impact through our members. “We want to expand our work to cover more and more sectors to increase event attendance for all.”

FULL MATCH REPLAY: London Broncos vs Batley Bulldogs

LONDON BRONCOS V BATLEY BULLDOGS (by David Ballheimer) London Broncos (6) 14, Batley Bulldogs (6) 16 London Broncos suffered the agony of conceding a last-play try to lose to the Batley Bulldogs. The truth is that London paid the penalty for dominating large parts of the game, especially the early part of the second half, but wasted great attacking positions with sloppy passes, poor run options or ineffective kicks. This is not the Bulldogs’ first two-point win over the Broncos, not even the first on 12 April because, 44 years ago – my first ever away game as a fan – the Londoners lost 10–8 to the Gallant Youths at Mount Pleasant. There were five tries at the Cherry Red, four more than I witnessed a week before Easter 1981.
