Mike Eccles: There is a lot of local talent around and we are after the next Jarred Bassett!

London Broncos Director of Rugby & Performance Mike Eccles has offered supporters an update on the current squad as he continues to build towards the new season.

There were a number of player departures following the conclusion of the 2024 Super League season and following the departure of David Hughes as owner the club are facing a big rebuild ahead of the Championship campaign getting underway in February.

Speaking to London Broncos media, Mike Eccles said;

“So we have extended to 6 with the number of original training trialists and then we had an open trial at the weekend which I thought was very successful and we have now invited 8 from that down.

“There is a lot of local talent around, which we know, and we are after the next Jarred Bassett.

“There is some real talent around and it was great to see to be honest with you and it was a very successful evening.

“They will join the group tonight, so we have the 11 that we signed, we have the 6 original training trialists which are going really well are bedding well into the team and then the new 8 trialists as well as ongoing recruitment for permanent signings.

The opening game of the season will take place on 25/26th of January against League One side Goole Vikings.

The players who have featured on trial in pre-season are yet to find out their long term future with the club and Mike Eccles says all outcomes with the group are being looked at;

“It might not be for this year. You might get some playing in January against Goole. Hopefully the ambition is that we get the reserve team back and the academy back, we want everything back. These players could play a part in the very near future or they could be more of a development plan.

“There are players already that I wish we had in our programme last year! It is still baby steps at the moment in terms of where we were last season and where we are now but the reality is we need to put a squad together and what we look like in January remains to be seen.”

MIKE ECCLES: “Things will get better this season.” London Broncos Director of Rugby & Performance Mike Eccles has assured fans that better things are on the horizon after a sticky period of form. It has been a tough run of results with three consecutive results but also injuries and unavailability of dual-registration players has meant Mike Eccles has been operating with the bare minimum in terms of players available for selection. The run doesn’t get any easier as this weekend Broncos are on the road again but this time to the league leaders Halifax Panthers on Sunday.

MATCH PREVIEW: Barrow Raiders vs London Broncos London Broncos have their longest away trip on UK soil this week as they make the trip up to Cumbria to take on Barrow Raiders. Broncos have lost their last two games and last three away games so will be looking to bounce back with a win on Good Friday. Mike Eccles’ side were a matter of seconds away from victory against Batley Bulldogs at The Cherry Red Records but suffered heartbreak as Alfie Dean scored in the final play to send the Bulldogs back to West Yorkshire with the points. Barrow have enjoyed a good start to the season and come into this game off the back of a good win at Widnes Vikings with a 37-12 win. It means in the early stages of the season after 6 games the Raiders have won 4 and currently sit in 4th place.
