Preview: 2024 Super League Round 3: Hull FC vs London Broncos

James Booth • 29 February 2024

The London Broncos have their second away Super League game of 2024 this Sunday as they face off against Hull FC at the MKM stadium in Hull. This is the first game that the Broncos have played against Hull FC since July 11th, 2019, at the KCOM (now MKM) stadium in Hull, where the home side walked away 35-22 victors in front of a crowd of 11,401. The Broncos have had a difficult beginning to their 2024 Super League campaign, playing against last year’s Super League semi-finalists St Helens Saints at the Totally Wicked Stadium and Grand finalists Catalans Dragons at the Cherry Red Records Stadium. Unfortunately, both results have gone against the London side, losing 40-4 to the Saints (to read the full recap report please click here) and 36-0 to the Dragons (to read the full recap report please click here).

Hull FC have also been on the receiving end of two losses out of two so far in their Super League season, getting beaten by rivals Hull KR 22-0 at the MKM stadium in Round 1, and then 36-10 by Warrington Wolves at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Speaking ahead of our Round 3 clash on Sunday, Hull FC player Jack Ashworth says “They are going to come out and throw everything they can at us. They have played two good teams in St Helens and Catalans, so they’ll look back at these games and be a good challenge for us”.

Ahead of this Sunday’s fixture, Director of Rugby & Performance Mike Eccles says “We are both looking for our first win of the season, but we are not preparing for the game any different than we have done the last two.

“They’re a good team, they have a great coach and some really good players.

“They have been really unfortunate themselves with a few suspensions and injuries but certainly no one has had it tougher than us”.

Also speaking to Broncos media is player Jared Bassett.

Jared has quite the Rugby League story to tell, playing for West Warriors in the Southern Conference League in 2021, moving to London Skolars and playing League 1 rugby in 2022, playing a huge part in London Broncos’ Championship success in 2023 and now playing Super League for the Broncos in 2024, making his debut against Catalans Dragons in our Round 2 fixture. Bassett says “It was great to get on the field (last week) and get my Super League debut, it was something that I never thought would happen, so it was a real experience and looking forward to getting on with the season now.

“I thought about it more when I was told I was going on and I thought “okay, here we go” and then once we got into the game and then I had another moment later that night when I got home and had a think about it.

“I had a great time (at Wests Warriors), I loved that club so much and without them I wouldn’t be where I am right now, so I’ll always love the Warriors”.

With both teams off to losing starts and multiple suspensions/injuries which Hull have suffered coming into Round 3, this is the perfect opportunity for Mike Eccles men to put some moves together, score some tries and hopefully leave the MKM stadium with the first victory of the season and build some momentum moving into our second home game of the season against World Champs Wigan Warriors on the 9th March. GAMEWEEK: Featherstone Rovers vs London Broncos Off the back of another win at The Cherry Red Records on Saturday against Hunslet the Broncos move into cup action this weekend. We turn our attentions to the 1895 Cup and a place in the semi-finals is at stake when we head to Featherstone Rovers to take on Paul Cooke's side. The last time we were in the 1895 Cup we reached the semi-final stages of the competition and will be looking to go at least one step further on this occasion. Broncos have already faced Featherstone once this season and it was Mike Eccles side who took the win in a league game at Wimbledon. The last time Broncos played at Featherstone was in the semi-final of the play-offs in 2023 and it was the Broncos who picked up a shock win to progress to the final and ultimately seal promotion back to Super League. LONDON BRONCOS V HUNSLET (by David Ballheimer) London Broncos (16) 26, Hunslet (0) 6 London Broncos produced one of their most dominant defensive performances in recent memory as they beat Hunslet at the Cherry Red Records Stadium on Saturday night. Such was London’s control of the ruck that the Yorkshiremen had only one attack on the London line, and they turned over the ball-carrier before he could ground the ball. At the other end, Hunslet could not cope with the power and strength of London’s ball-carriers. The Broncos made a great start, scoring on their second possession, courtesy of Marcus Stock, who found a way through three tacklers before stretching over the line and grounding the ball. Most of the credit, however, belonged to Huw Worthington, who charged 35 metres downfield returning a kick. Four minutes later, Stock turned provider, turning in a tackle and sending Luke Polselli over. The half-back was able to run behind the posts to make Chris Hellec’s second conversion even easier than his first.
