Broncos visit local community hospices & hospitals

22 December 2023

Members of the men’s first team, Broncos staff and mascots, Buck and Dusty, were spreading festive cheer in the community this week visiting St George’s Hospital, Royal Trinity Hospice and Wimbledon Guild.

With support from our sponsor Smashlings, players Alex Walker and James Meadows along with Buck and Dusty were issuing toys to children in St George’s children’s wards. At a time of year where families even more greatly feel the effects of their child spending Christmas in hospital, the Broncos team were on hand to chat with patients and bring some much-needed smiles with a Smashlings gift for the children and some treats for the dedicated staff that care for them.

The giving season didn’t stop there. Alex, James and the team spent some time with the staff at Royal Trinity Hospice who each day provide compassionate end of life care to people living with a serious life-limiting illness. The Broncos team toured the 26-bed inpatient unit, chatted with the staff leaving Christmas goodies and tickets to the first London Broncos game of the season on Friday 23rd February.

Gifts from Smashlings were also donated by the team to Wimbledon Guild, Wimbledon’s largest independent charity and the Dons Local Action Group.

Mark Kemp, Head of Commercial at London Broncos said of the day “It’s wonderful to be out in the community, supporting these much-needed support systems in the local area in any way we can. It comes as part of an ongoing community outreach programme that enables London Broncos as a team to give back to the area through partnerships, education and sports programmes and charitable initiatives”.

Dave Chattaway, the group CFO of Toikido Smashlings, says “Following our involvement with the tremendous end to the 2023 season with London Broncos, we are delighted to be able to support them with the valued work in the community that they carry out and it is great to know, especially at this time of year, that London Broncos & Toikido, with our smashlings toys, are able to help raise a smile”.

A big thank you to these fantastic organisations for letting us spend some time with you at this special time of year. We encourage all our supporters to find out more about how you can get involved in supporting these charities in the future.

GAMEWEEK: Featherstone Rovers vs London Broncos Off the back of another win at The Cherry Red Records on Saturday against Hunslet the Broncos move into cup action this weekend. We turn our attentions to the 1895 Cup and a place in the semi-finals is at stake when we head to Featherstone Rovers to take on Paul Cooke's side. The last time we were in the 1895 Cup we reached the semi-final stages of the competition and will be looking to go at least one step further on this occasion. Broncos have already faced Featherstone once this season and it was Mike Eccles side who took the win in a league game at Wimbledon. The last time Broncos played at Featherstone was in the semi-final of the play-offs in 2023 and it was the Broncos who picked up a shock win to progress to the final and ultimately seal promotion back to Super League. LONDON BRONCOS V HUNSLET (by David Ballheimer) London Broncos (16) 26, Hunslet (0) 6 London Broncos produced one of their most dominant defensive performances in recent memory as they beat Hunslet at the Cherry Red Records Stadium on Saturday night. Such was London’s control of the ruck that the Yorkshiremen had only one attack on the London line, and they turned over the ball-carrier before he could ground the ball. At the other end, Hunslet could not cope with the power and strength of London’s ball-carriers. The Broncos made a great start, scoring on their second possession, courtesy of Marcus Stock, who found a way through three tacklers before stretching over the line and grounding the ball. Most of the credit, however, belonged to Huw Worthington, who charged 35 metres downfield returning a kick. Four minutes later, Stock turned provider, turning in a tackle and sending Luke Polselli over. The half-back was able to run behind the posts to make Chris Hellec’s second conversion even easier than his first.
